Understanding Fat, Syndrome X and Beyond

Ronald M. Evans, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, examines environment, lifestyle, diet, marketing, and biology as contributors to the obesity epidemic. How do our bodies balance the storage and burning of dietary fat? Fat carries information about how it should be used. Saturated fats are hard to break down, so they tend to get stored, while unsaturated fats are more readily consumed for energy. Too much stored fat leads to elevated blood glucose levels, which triggers insulin resistance — the first step toward diabetes. Dr. Evans explores how diet and exercise influence the relationship between fat and muscle, precipitating diseases such as syndrome X, a disorder involving high blood pressure, heart disease, atherosclerosis, and insulin resistance.

Syndrome X and Trans Fats

Syndrome X – what is it, what causes this seemingly broad based syndrome, and what steps can we take to restore our optimum function? One cause of Syndrome X is trans-fats, and many are working diligently to remove trans-fats from our food. What other actions can we take to reserve Syndrome X? Our body has an amazing ability, by design, to heal itself, but it needs fuel to do anything. Giving our body the cellular level foods it needs to fuel our mitochondria in the production of cellular ATP energy is the focus in reversing and eliminating Syndrome X. Fuel translates to Energy which translates to the resources needed by the body to repair the damage done by the use of trans-fats in our fast foods and processed foods.

Check out this BabagaNewz Flash with Avi Gooday about Syndrome X. Avi explains how trans fats contribute to this new health crisis, the process of hydrogenation, and the Jewish point of view on the recent trans fat ban in NY city.

Nick Martin MD speaking about Syndrome X

It’s great that we are hearing more about Syndrome X, that broad ranged issue that is caused by our western diet.

Is this a real issue? Yes most definately. What are the symptoms? They vary, but the underlying cause could be seen as the body’s inability to produce the energy needed to maintain health.

There are foods that aggrevate and promote a decrease in health and energy. Syndrome X, in this readers view, is definately a collection of dis-ease outbursts, with a primary cause taking the path of least resistance!

It seems reasonable to me that if you give the body what it needs to heal, build, and restore itself then we have a solution. How many years ago did I hear “treat the cause, not the symptoms”?
